Leslie Hugh Bartlett died in a London nursing home on 4th February, 1954, at the age of 67.
He worked during 1903 at Cardiganshire lead and copper mines, and after matriculating at London University entered the Royal School of Mines in 1905, where he obtained a first-class Associateship in Mining in 1908 and was awarded the De La Beche Medal.
He left immediately for India to take up employment with Central Provinces Prospecting Syndicate, Ltd., holding the position of engineer in charge for the first two years of manganese mines in Bhandara District and then of the Syndicate’s Balaghat mines. He was appointed manager of the Balaghat and Ramrama mines in 1912 and was promoted agent and general manager of the company in 1923, the company’s name being changed to Central Provinces Manganese Ore Co., Ltd., in 1924. Mr. Bartlett, on joining the board of directors in 1947, took up residence in England, and retained the directorship until his death, thus having spent his entire career in the service of the one company. He had been awarded the O.B.E. for his work in India.
Mr. Bartlett was elected a Student of the Institution in 1907, was transferred to Associate Membership in 1913 and to Membership in 1920. He served the Institution as Member of Council for India from 1943 to 1947.
