Peter Maltitz Anderson died on 5th November, 1954, at his home in Johannesburg. He was 75 years of age.
He was born at Heilbron, Orange Free State. After obtaining the B.Sc. degree at the South African College, Mr. Anderson became a student at the School of Mines, Kimberley. His first service was on the survey staff of Rose Deep gold mine, and with Eckstein’s Central Administration, Corner House. Subsequently he spent a year as mine manager in Rhodesia, returning to the Witwatersrand in 1911 to join A. Goerz and Co. The Goerz group was merged into Union Corporation, Ltd, with which firm Mr. Anderson remained for the rest of his life.
Starting as a mine manager he soon became consulting engineer to the group. In 1928 he was made a director of the Corporation and of several subsidiary companies. He was appointed deputy chairman and managing director of the Corporation in 1945, holding this position at the time of his death.
Mr. Anderson had on five occasions been elected President of the Transvaal Chamber of Mines — in 1925, 1930, 1933, 1937 and 1940-41. He was President of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, and was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Third Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in South Africa in 1930. He represented the South African Associated Chambers of Commerce at the Ottawa Conference in 1934 and was unofficial adviser to the Union delegation.
In 1946 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Science of the University of the Witwatersrand and was in the same year appointed Chairman of the Council of the University. He was also a member of the Witwatersrand Council of Education.
Mr. Anderson was elected an Honorary Member of the Institution in 1930.
