This small colliery, off Turner Lane, was sunk between 1850 and 1853, and from 1854 to 1865 is listed as Bredbury Black Mine. It was worked by members of the Jowett family until the early 1860s, when Thomas Livesey took it over. As its alternative name suggests, the seam worked was the Black Mine. Fireclay was also worked.
The colliery closed in July 1875, and all the machinery, rails and materials were removed by December. Nevertheless, Bredbury appears in the List of Mines for 1880, when the Bredbury Coal & Iron Co. owned it.
Bredbury was standing again in 1885 and 1896, when J. & A. Stott Milne were the owners. This may be the consequence of the former manager’s house and weigh office collapsing into the shaft, which occurred in the 1880s. It also marks the end of Bredbury, because mining was moved to Lingard Lane.
