North Skelton Mine was opened by Messrs. Bolckow and Vaughan in 1872 after major trouble and expense sinking the two shafts over 700 feet deep.
Adjoining was built a village for the mine which is still a thriving community today.
This successful mine finally closed on the 17th January 1964, the last working mine of an industry which had produced some 350 million tons and employed 10,000 men in a little over a century.
